Medical Students

Advocating for Underserved Populations (MSAUP)

We focus on assessing the needs of underserved populations within the community, creating projects to help meet those needs, collecting and interpreting data based on the identified underserved population and developing partnerships with like-minded organizations in the community. We currently partner with Youth Futures and Switchpoint, local homeless shelters, for various projects. We also host Naloxone training, participate in an annual Giving Tree activity for the holidays, and co-sponsor several other events throughout the year.

CURRENT COMMUNITY INITIATIVES:

  • Doctors Volunteer Clinic/ Switchpoint Triage Center ​​

    • Free, drop-in triage center at Switchpoint Community Resource Center in conjunction . ​

    • Lead by Katie Werman and Tanusri Ganapathy

  • Youth Futures

    • Maintaining and expanding relationships with Youth Futures youth homeless shelter. ​Engaging youth through mentorship activities. 

    • Lead by Cassidy Carda

  • Community Garden 

    • Providing fresh produce for Youth Futures St. George, Utah's home for vulnerable and homeless youth. ​

    • Lead by Jackson Case

  • Hispanic Health 

    • Maintaining and expanding relationships with the Hispanic/Latinx community in greater St. George area. ​​

    • Lead by Mercedes Castillo

​

  • Addiction Medicine

    • Coordinating community-wide prescription take back events, Naloxone training, and Addiction Recovery Coaching in Healthcare and Emergency Settings (ARCHES). ​

    • Lead by Phillip Worthington and Jason Hailes

​

  • LGBTQ+ Health 

    • ​Consistently evaluating the healthcare needs of the LGBTQ+ community in Washington County, Utah.​​

    • Works with community partners, like Encircle, to provide appropriate education and resources to the LGBTQ+ community.

  • Switchpoint Coordinator

    • Coordinate and maintain proper staffing of volunteers for the Switchpoint triage center.

    • Lead by Katie Werman and Tanusri Ganapathy

  • Music Healing Initiative Director ​

    • Providing music performances to improve the social, mental, and spiritual well-being of the elderly underserved population and people with Dementia in Southern Utah.

    • Bringing the holidays to 70+ underserved families in Washington County​.

    • Training in Rapid HIV/HVC testing, motivational interviewing, and respectful clinical skills. ​
