Welcome to SMIG, a sub-club of SAOAO! We are excited to begin to explore the field of sports medicine, increase knowledge of the practice and introduce you to influential doctors in the field!

Mission:

To provide RVUCOM students with opportunities to develop skills in Sports Medicine using a holistic and comprehensive approach to prevent, diagnose, and manage sports related orthopedic impairments and injuries. The Sports Medicine Interest Group will aid students interested in both surgical management and primary care in sports medicine. Moreover, the Sports Medicine Interest Group will look to helping members develop their skills as an osteopathic physician to use in their future fields.

Purpose Statements:

  • Teach comprehensive management of the athlete across a broad scope of specializations including: Orthopedic Surgery, Family Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, etc.

  • Teach the importance of utilizing manual medicine skills in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries, disorders, and dysfunctions.

  • Teach the importance of exercise prescription in injury prevention, proper rehabilitation techniques, and the value of proper dieting.

  • Apply the science learned to improving the health care of not only athletes, but the general public and those with special needs.
